As part of Sound Transits massive expansion effort, the Bellevue OMFE (Operations and Maintenance Facility East) was built to support the region's growing light rail fleet. When service extends to Northgate (2021), Bellevue, Mercer Island, and Redmond (2023), and Lynnwood and Federal Way (2024), the light rail system will more than double in size and the light rail fleet will more than triple from 62 to 214 vehicles.
Considerations for this large coating project were not only LEED v4 requirements, but also that most of the high performance steel coatings were to applied over the winter months, with no heat or other environmental controls yet installed. For these reasons, Series 27WB and Series 1095 were chosen by the project architects. Over 2000 gallons of each were installed over the winter of 2019/2020.
Further, once dried in and heat was available, the painting contractor moved on the coating all the interior concrete and block with Series 1254, high performance epoxy block filler, and Series 156 an elastomeric acrylate.
The facility is now in service and these coating systems are the preferred choice amongst the specifying team for future Sound Transit projects.
