This massive 15 million dollar hydro plant rehab took over 4 years to complete and included refurbishing of 11 tainter gates, 12 intake gates, two sets of stop logs, six tailrace gates, five miscellaneous cranes and other associated items at the Cowans Ford Hydro plant. Superior Industrial Maintenance did both the mechanical and coatings work for the project. The project was so large and successful, it was highlighted in the July 2021 issue of Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings(JPCL). The coatings system chosen was an immersion grade three coat epoxy system with a stripe coat for all welds, edges, angels and surface irregularities. Tnemec 66 Hi-Build Epoxoline was the specified and utilized epoxy. After a SSPC-SP10/NACE 2 Near White Metal Blast Cleaning, that system was applied to the upstream sides of the gate and all immersion and intermittent immersion areas. A third party inspector carefully oversaw all aspects of the surface preparation and applications. Once completed the project results were accepted by the owner and they expect a 20 to 30 year lifecycle for this rehab project.
