The Phoenix Sky Train shuttles travelers to and from the airport 24 hours a day. Along with being highly functional, designers desired some artistic elements to the experience. Vibrant Pantone colors were selected, so it was important to select a high performance coating that will retain color and gloss for a long time. Of the many high performance topcoats offered by Tnemec, SmithGroup selected Series 740 UVX for this project. Series 740 offers superior color and gloss retention to traditional polyurethane topcoats. It is a durable film that exhibits excellent exterior weathering and abrasion resistance.
Aesthetics were not the only factor in the coating system selection process. Long-term corrosion protection was also critical, so Series 90-97 Tneme-Zinc was selected as the prime coat. Series 90-97 is an organic, zinc rich primer that offers rapid curing and superior corrosion resistance. A coat of Series N69 Hi-Build Epoxoline II was utilized as the intermediate coat, providing even more corrosion protection.
