The Pyramid Peak Water Treatment Plant in North Phoenix was expanded in 2021 and needed a secondary containment upgrade. A novolac vinyl ester mat reinforced mortar (MRM) system was selected to provide chemical, impact and abrasion resistance. Tnemec Series 252SC ChemBloc was applied over a flexible resinous mortar basecoat of Series 206SC ChemBloc.
Because secondary containment coatings need more than just chemical protection, the elements of this system were tailored to the project needs. Series 206SC is a glass reinforced flexible epoxy mortar designed to bridge small cracks in the concrete substrate. A fiberglass mat was embedded into the wet mortar and saturated with chemical resistant resin to further resist cracking. Series 252SC vinyl ester was selected as the topcoat for it's superior chemical resistance. Following best practice, the entire system was holiday tested with high voltage equipment to ensure it was pinhole free.
Secondary containment needs more than just chemical resistant coatings. Contact us to learn how to deal with impact, abrasion, thermal cycling and chemical contact.
